Fertilizer is an important part of farming. There are many types of fertilizer, each of which has a different ratio of the aforementioned elements.

Fertilizers

Fertilizer is any organic or inorganic material added to soils to supply one or more elements required for plant growth. Organic fertilizers include animal wastes, green manure, sludge and compost. Inorganic fertilizers include synthetic compounds containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Chemical fertilizers are not recommended as they can damage the surrounding environment.

Nitrogen (N) is important for photosynthesis and leaf growth; phosphorus (P) is important for root growth; and potassium (K) is important for the overall health of the plant as well as increasing flower production, fruit quality, color and yield.

Soil Amendments: Soil amendments are materials which improve soil structure, porosity or drainage of poor soils. Organic materials such as composted bark fines and peat moss provide these benefits plus add needed nutrients to the soil at a slower release rate than inorganic fertilizer salts.
